A soft starter is a device that can be added to an electric motor for a different start method. The main reason behind using a soft starter is to reduce the strain on a motor when the power is turned on. A soft starter helps in the gradual starting of a motor by applying increasing voltages. A soft starter is used to reduce the inrush currents and limit torque, useful if you want to protect your equipment, extend the life of your motor and reduce motor heating with frequent starts and stops. So, a soft starter provides a gentle acceleration up to full speed and they are used only at startup. Soft starters are seen in electrical R/C helicopters, and allow the rotor blades to spool-up in a smooth, controlled manner rather than a sudden surge. In all systems, a soft start limits the inrush current and so improves stability of the power supply and reduces transient voltage drops that may affect other loads.
