An overload relay is an electrical safety device that protects motors and other equipment from damage caused by excessive current or overloading. It senses the current flowing through the circuit and trips the power supply if the current exceeds a predetermined limit, preventing overload relay and potential damage to the equipment. It senses the overloading of the motor and interrupts the power flow to the motor, thus protecting it from overheating and winding damages. Apart from overloads, it can also protect the motor from phase loss/ failures and phase imbalance. They are very commonly known as OLR. Overload protection is an essential feature of motor and pump protection relays, as it helps to protect the motor or pump from damage due to excessive current draw.
